- ...Introduction...
For some reason, IGN likes to delete perfectly useful threads. Here I am trying to recreate a good thread. This thread will cover the basic and maybe even some advanced stuff for the Firefox web browser. You are going to need a few things.
Okay, so maybe you only need one thing so far, but by the end of this, you should have a bunch of stuff to make browser IGN and the internet so much better.
- ...Themes...
First, let’s make Firefox look a little bit better. Personally, I enjoyed the default for a time, but eventually I needed a change. Here are my two favorite themes:
- iFox – Smooth and sleek. The best thing about this is that there are no favicons on the bookmark toolbar.
- Pimpzilla – Corny. Extravagant. Pimp. I love it, and so will you.
So you may not like my two top choices, but here are a few more. There was a pretty cool Super Mario Theme, but I can’t seem to find a working link. Someone let me know if you find one.
- ...Extension...
I’m not going to into a whole lot of detail in this section. I did a huge thread on the Firefox board a while back. Here’s a link. It is a little outdated, but most of the extensions should still work. I’m just going to hit on some highlights and must-haves!
- All-in-One Gestures - This extension allows you to execute common commands using mouse gestures, rocker navigation, scroll wheel navigation and page scrolling.
- Auto Copy - Select text and it's automatically copied to the clipboard. Like Linux or mIrc or Trillian
- Back to Top – Okay, so this might be for the lazy, but I love it. Right click and get back to the top instantly. You can even get the button on the toolbar and just click it to get to the top or bottom of the page instantly.
- STOP! – Hammertime! Okay, so maybe this isn’t a must-have, but I know zikman will love me for including it in this thread.
- IE Tab – Must-have – Since some websites may not work in Firefox, you can just use this extension to view the page in an IE Tab!
- Menu Editor – This lets you rearrange items in the menus and right click menu. It even lets you hide menus. Very useful if you are interested in saving space!
- Mouse Gestures – A toned down version of All-in-One Gestures.
- Super DragAndGo - Drag a link or anything like a uri (e.g. abc.com ), and throw it to anywhere blank on the webpage to open the it in a new tab.
- Text-to-Image – Convert those useless outsider posted images into actual images. Very useful for when an outsider decides to post lots of image links
- ...AdBlock...
Quite possibly the best feature to come from Firefox. Adblock! I’ve made a page on my googlepages about this before, but I’m going to recreate it.
First, you will need Adblock+. There are two things to do after that. You can get rid of almost all ads on the intrawebs by installing this extension: Adblock Filterset.G Updater. I know you guys aren’t interested in that though. Onto the good stuff: How to block those horrid IGN ads. You can import one of two filters to get rid of them. If you save this filter or this filter and then import it to Adblock+, you will rid yourself of those huge IGN ads.
The second link is too zikman’s filter. It also includes other sites, but if you installed the Filterset.G the extra sites won’t be necessary. His filter includes the necessary IGN sites to block, so you can use his or the first link.
If anything is unclear, either PM me or go to this page for some more info.
- ...IGN.Exclusives...
There are really only a few things to talk about here: IGNbq, Youtube Embed, Bluetex.
As nearly every Vesti user knows, IGNbq is the quintessential Firefox add-on for IGN. This extension gives you a quick reply box. Here’s a link to how to install it. Once you install it, if you go to your add-ons and get to the IGNbq options and set it to “plain text editor by default” there won’t be any errors.
I wouldn’t expect an update for IGNbq anytime soon or ever. The creator has disappeared and I doubt he will be returning.
Onto the two brilliant extensions from lednerg. Youbtube Embed turns any youtube link on IGN into an embedded video. Just click the link and lednerg’s post will explain it all!
Bluetex 2 – This is a stylesheet for IGN. It changes the look of IGN and personally I think it looks better. You can also install separate styles by going here. You can get things such as an anti-page stretch, invisitext revealer, proper image sizes, and a custom icon!
Here are some different stylesheets for IGN if you don’t like Bluetex. If you are any good at CSS, you may even be able to edit some of these and create your own!
- ...Extras...
Here are some random tricks and information for Firefox.
Here’s a link for the people that complain about Firefox having a memory leak. Just some information on how to restrict how much memory Firefox can even use.
If you are like me and enjoy as much space as possibly, you may like this trick. On the bookmark toolbar, you can hide the favicons. On my toolbar they took up way too much space so I searched on google and finally found a fix. First, you must have Stylish. Once you have it installed, you can create a new Style. Make a blank one and paste this in the new style:
@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);
/* Hide bookmark icons in the Personal Toolbar */
toolbarbutton.bookmark-item > .toolbarbutton-icon {
display: none; }
One of the most unnoticed feature Firefox has to offer: Smart Keywords. I got rid of the clunky search bar awhile ago. I replaced it by starting to use Smart Keywords. I don’t really know how to explain it easily so here is mozilla’s short tutorial.
I have this set up for a bunch of searches. If you combine this with ctrl+L (takes you to the location bar), you can search for things incredibly easily. If you have any questions, just PM me.
For now, that is all I have to post about. I’m saving this to my googlepage so it doesn’t get deleted by IGN, so you will always be able to find it there. If there is anything I can explain further or anything to add, just let me know!
So concludes the Firefox All-in-One Thread re-make.
